New
Media productions are fundamentally multimedia productions, merging
film, sound, animation, graphic design, text, and more, using digital
technologies; and New Media productions offer their viewers an unprecedented number of
ways to interact with the information they present.
So
a more descriptive term for New Media might be "Interactive
Multimedia."
Interactive
multimedia productions are non-linear. Users, rather than working
their ways straight through an interactive multimedia production (as
they might read a book), can move through the production in many
different directions. Interactive
multimedia productions are also multi-layered, allowing users to move,
if they choose, to deeper and deeper levels of investigation (or to
stick with simple, basic information).
We're
not talking only websites here: CD Roms, DVD menus, video games,
information centers, readouts in everything from palm pilots to car
dashboards are taking advantage of the capabilities of digital,
interactive multimedia production tools and techniques. Consider
what this technology could do for (or with) education, art, commerce,
drama.
